# Gilas Pilipinas' World Cup Push: November Window Preview

*Two road games in Malaysia, a naturalized-player decision and a 4-4 record that makes every result count.*

When Gilas Pilipinas resume their 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifying campaign in late November, they will do so on neutral ground — Seremban, Malaysia — with a 4-4 record, a roster still taking shape, and very little margin for error.

## Where Gilas stand

The Philippines sit in the middle of second-round Group E of the Asian Qualifiers, behind unbeaten Australia (8-0), New Zealand (6-2), and Iran and Jordan (both 5-3), [per The Manila Times](https://www.manilatimes.net/2026/10/06/sports/cone-expects-solid-gilas-roster-by-november-fiba-window/2439648). A top-three finish books a place at the World Cup in Doha — and, for the program's bigger dream, the best Asian finisher there earns an Olympic berth, [as the Philippine Star notes](https://www.philstar.com/campus/sports/2026/09/01/2553118/size-youth-propel-gilas).

The schedule is compact: **Syria on November 27, Iran on November 30**, at a centralized neutral venue with the window running November 23 to December 1 — Manila is not an option because FIBA requires a neutral host, SBP executive director Erika Dy confirmed. The final window follows in February: Jordan on the 25th, Syria on the 28th.

## How they got here

Gilas' campaign has been a rollercoaster. In the July window they pushed New Zealand to a 102-106 double-overtime loss in Auckland before falling to Australia in Perth — both without a naturalized player for long stretches. Then came the August window at Mall of Asia Arena: home wins over Jordan and Iran, a two-game sweep that dragged the record back to .500 and revived the whole bid, [per SPIN.ph](https://www.spin.ph/basketball/fiba/gilas-expects-boatwright-to-lead-loaded-team-in-next-fiba-window-a793-20261004). In between, an all-local Gilas squad suffered a group-stage exit at the Nagoya Asian Games — a reminder of how thin the margin is when the stars are missing, [as the Daily Tribune reported](https://tribune.net.ph/2026/10/08/matters-of-the-heart-3).

## The roster puzzle

Coach Tim Cone expects a solid group by November — "Nothing is ever sure, as we have learned over the last couple of years, but we certainly are expecting them to be available," [he told The Manila Times](https://www.manilatimes.net/2026/10/06/sports/cone-expects-solid-gilas-roster-by-november-fiba-window/2439648). The core pool blends PBA mainstays with overseas talent: Dwight Ramos and AJ Edu based in Japan, Kevin Quiambao and Carl Tamayo in Korea's KBL — leagues required to release players for FIBA windows, unlike the non-FIBA Asian Games. Kai Sotto and Quentin Millora-Brown remain question marks, but Gilas received one firm commitment this week: 6-foot-8 Mike Phillips, fresh off an 18-point, 10-rebound debut for Kyoto Hannaryz, [will make himself available](https://www.spin.ph/basketball/fiba/mike-phillips-to-make-himself-available-to-gilas-in-fiba-window-a2244-20261020), according to his manager. His timing matters — June Mar Fajardo recently retired from national team duty, leaving the frontline thin.

The bigger decision is at naturalized player. Justin Brownlee, 38, has not played since July 3 — and the reason turned out to be serious: Cone disclosed at a Senate hearing this month that Brownlee is dealing with blood pressure and heart concerns, not ordinary injuries, [per the Tribune](https://tribune.net.ph/2026/10/08/matters-of-the-heart-3). Meanwhile **Bennie Boatwright** — the 6-foot-11 shooter now with the Fujian Sturgeons in the CBA — had his naturalization bill lapse into law and is deep into passport processing, [SPIN.ph reports](https://www.spin.ph/basketball/fiba/boatwright-finally-available-for-gilas-come-november-window-a795-20260903). If both are healthy, Cone says he will keep "an open mind" between them.

## What November decides

The math is stark. Beating Iran in Seremban would flip a direct rival — pushing Gilas to 5-4 while dragging Iran toward them — and transform February's Jordan and Syria rematches into a victory lap. A split keeps the race alive; going 0-2 likely buries it, with only two games left to play.

There is a quieter structural story here too. The PBA has paused its Governors' Cup from November 9 to December 3 purely so Gilas can prepare — and is planning a Malaysia training camp beforehand, [per SPIN.ph](https://www.spin.ph/basketball/fiba/gilas-plans-malaysia-camp-as-part-of-long-buildup-for-fiba-window-a793-20261016). Domestic league, overseas releases, naturalized-player succession: for the first time in years, the pieces of the Philippine program are aligned on one calendar. November will show whether that translates into wins.
