Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal: Ngumoha, 18, Stars in Anfield Comeback
No goals, two assists and a standing ovation — the teenager became Liverpool's youngest scorer-or-creator in the Champions League on a record night.
In a Champions League night of seven goals at Anfield, none belonged to Rio Ngumoha. It was still his game.
The 18-year-old, at 18 years and 52 days the youngest Liverpool player to score or assist in the competition, dragged his team back from two goals down to a 4-3 win over Villarreal — and left the pitch in the 74th minute to a standing ovation and chants of "Rio, Rio, Rio".
Turning the tide
Liverpool were poor for much of the first half and trailed by two before Alexis Mac Allister pulled one back. Then Ngumoha took over: a delicate dinked ball found Ronald Araujo for the equaliser, and after the break he beat Sergi Cardona and held off Juan Foyth to set up Mac Allister for 3-2. Florian Wirtz added the vital fourth.
The numbers backed the eye test — 12 touches in the opposition box, seven of eight dribbles completed, two assists. UEFA named him player of the match, and Duran Duran's "Rio" played over the Tannoy at full time.
"I'll just keep going and be ruthless"
"Whenever I get the ball and there's an opportunity to go one versus one, I believe in myself," Ngumoha told Amazon Prime. "I'll just keep going and be ruthless."
Head coach Andoni Iraola praised his attitude while preaching patience: "He is only 18 and still not the full package. There will be ups and downs in the process."
Contract talks continue — his current deal, signed weeks after his 17th birthday, runs to 2028 — but after a night when Anfield sang his name and Alisson wrapped him in a hug, Liverpool know they have something special to keep.
