# SEA Sports Digest: A Week of Firsts Across the Region

*Indonesia's 35-year wait ends at home, flag football crowns its first Southeast Asian kings, and a Filipino teenager nearly takes a world title.*

The inaugural edition of our regional digest — the week's Southeast Asian sports stories the global wires missed, in brief.

## Indonesia ends the 35-year wait

Indonesia won the first-ever FIFA ASEAN Cup on October 5, beating Thailand 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 epic at Gelora Bung Karno before 70,098 fans. Elkan Baggott forced the shootout with a 116th-minute equalizer; goalkeeper Emil Audero then saved the decisive kick. It is the Garuda's first senior men's title since the 1991 SEA Games, [per the AFF](https://www.aseanfootball.org/v3/indonesia-crowned-champions-division-one-fifa-asean-cup-2026/) and [FIFA](https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/asean-cup/2026/articles/indonesia-thailand-final-report-highlights-quotes). Malaysia took bronze over Vietnam.

## Flag football crowns its first kings

The Philippines won the men's title at the first Southeast Asia Flag Football Championship in Jakarta (October 16-18), with Indonesia taking the women's division — five nations, 25 games, and 45,000 YouTube viewers as the sport builds toward its [Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028](https://www.americanfootball.sport/2026/10/21/philippines-and-indonesia-crowned-champions-of-the-southeast-asia-flag-football-championship-2026/). [Malaysia left with two silvers](https://stadiumastro.com/sukan/flag-football-malaysia-tewas-kepada-indonesia-dalam-final-bawa-pulang-2-pingat).

## One scratch from a world title

Nineteen-year-old AJ Manas, partnering Carlo Biado, was three balls from the WPA World Doubles 10-Ball crown in Bali before a cue-ball scratch let Spain's Sánchez Ruiz and Alcaide off the hook, [per the Philippine Star](https://www.philstar.com/sports/2026/10/05/2561118/biado-manas-fall-short-world-doubles-10-ball-crown). Silver — and a warning to the rest of world pool.
