Swiatek Calls Time on 'Most Demanding' Season Early
A thigh injury ended her season in Ningbo — and with it, the first year since 2019 without a WTA Finals place and since 2021 without a Slam.
Iga Swiatek has decided she has had enough of 2026. The six-time Grand Slam champion announced she is ending her season early, hours after a thigh injury forced her out of the Ningbo Open.
That withdrawal had already confirmed she would miss the WTA Finals for the first time since 2019. At 25 and down to world No. 9, Swiatek chose the longer route back.
"Rest and recover fully"
"The past few months, or actually the past couple of years, have been incredibly intense," she said. "I feel I need to rest and recover my body fully, so that's exactly what I will do — for a bit longer this time."
The season ends without a major for the first time since 2021, and the record tells its own story: a 42-16 win-loss, one title — the Canadian Open in August, where she beat Elena Rybakina — and a coaching change in March that brought in Francisco Roig after she split from Wim Fissette.
There were signs of a late surge: she reached the Wuhan semi-finals last week before losing to fellow Pole Maja Chwalinska, a match in which she needed treatment on the thigh and was visibly emotional afterwards. "I'm especially proud of the work we've done in the second half of the year," she said. "It gives me a lot of confidence in what's ahead."
The prize waiting in January
The carrot is unusually specific. The Australian Open in January offers Swiatek the chance to complete the career Grand Slam — the one major she has never won.
A full reset now makes that a realistic target rather than a tired hope. For a player who has been open about the anxiety she feels on court, stepping away on her own terms may be the most important win of a frustrating year.
